Balham Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Balham Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing carpet, upholstery and related cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks, preventing accidents and ensuring safe working practices at all premises where we operate.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to conduct all cleaning activities safely and responsibly, reducing risks so far as is reasonably practicable. We aim to prevent injury, work-related ill health, property damage and avoidable disruption to our clients. Continuous improvement in health and safety performance is integral to the way we plan and deliver our services.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Balham Carpet Cleaning has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this policy. Management will ensure that adequate resources, equipment, training and supervision are provided to support safe working practices. We will periodically review our arrangements for health and safety and update procedures when legislation, industry guidance or the nature of our services changes.
Managers will carry out or commission risk assessments for tasks undertaken by our teams, including carpet cleaning, rug cleaning, upholstery cleaning and related activities. Control measures identified through these assessments will be implemented, communicated and monitored.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Balham Carpet Cleaning has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff are required to follow all safety instructions, use equipment only as trained, and report any hazards, accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions to management without delay.
Employees must use personal protective equipment provided by the company, such as gloves, eye protection or masks where necessary, and must keep this equipment in good condition. Staff must never tamper with safety devices, bypass procedures or undertake tasks for which they have not been trained or authorised.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Balham Carpet Cleaning will conduct suitable and proportionate risk assessments for all significant hazards associated with our services, including chemical use, manual handling, slips, trips and falls, electrical equipment, and working in client premises. Where risks cannot be eliminated, they will be controlled through safe systems of work, appropriate equipment, training and supervision.
Method statements and safe working procedures will be developed for regular tasks such as hot water extraction cleaning, spot and stain treatment, use of portable machines and handling of hoses, cables and tools. These procedures will be communicated clearly to staff and reinforced through on-the-job guidance.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Cleaning chemicals and solutions used by Balham Carpet Cleaning will be selected and managed with care. We will obtain and keep up to date safety information for all substances used in our work. Chemicals will be stored, transported, diluted and applied in accordance with the manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data.
Where required, appropriate control measures will be in place, such as ventilation, controlled use of sprayers, personal protective equipment and restricted access to chemical storage. Staff will be trained in the safe handling of cleaning products and instructed never to mix chemicals or decant them into unlabelled containers.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Our teams routinely move and operate portable cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, wands, hoses and related equipment. To reduce the risk of manual handling injuries, we will assess lifting and carrying tasks and introduce handling techniques, equipment positioning and team lifting where appropriate.
All electrical cleaning equipment used by Balham Carpet Cleaning will be maintained in good condition and inspected periodically. Staff will be trained to check equipment before use, to route cables safely, and to report any defects immediately. Faulty equipment will be taken out of service until repaired or replaced.
Working in Client Premises
Our work is often carried out in homes, offices and commercial environments. We will take all reasonable steps to minimise risks created by our activities for clients, visitors and the public. This includes maintaining clear access routes, using visible warning signs where floors are damp, keeping hoses and cables tidy where possible and coordinating our work with client representatives.
Before starting work, staff will familiarise themselves with the layout of the premises, any site-specific risks, fire exits and emergency arrangements. Any damage, hazards or incidents arising during the work will be reported promptly to both the client and management.
Training, Information and Supervision
Balham Carpet Cleaning is committed to ensuring that all employees receive appropriate health and safety training relevant to their role. This includes induction training for new starters, task-specific instruction, and periodic refresher sessions. Training will cover safe use of equipment, manual handling, chemical handling, hazard awareness and emergency procedures.
Supervisors and senior staff will monitor working practices to confirm that training is being applied and that safety procedures are followed. Where necessary, additional instruction or corrective action will be provided to maintain safe standards of work.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health involving our employees or arising from our activities must be reported to management as soon as possible. We will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures, including fire, first aid and evacuation arrangements, will be followed in accordance with the requirements of the premises where work is being carried out. Our staff will cooperate with site-specific emergency rules and inform the client promptly if an emergency occurs while we are on site.
Consultation and Review
Balham Carpet Cleaning encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise any concerns, suggestions or observations regarding safety with their supervisor or management. Constructive feedback from clients regarding health and safety performance is also welcomed and will be taken into account in our continuous improvement process.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and amended when necessary to reflect changes in our services, working methods or applicable regulations. The up-to-date policy will be made available to employees and to clients upon request.
By implementing this policy and working together, Balham Carpet Cleaning aims to deliver high quality cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone affected by our operations.
